Space age cars 1950s ameirca1/2/2024 The end of the tailfin really didn’t have its beginnings with one car or even one company, pretty much every single new 1960 model year car featured either significantly smaller tailfins or none at all. By the time the United States had turned around its position in the Space Race in the mid-1960s, the tailfin had essentially gone extinct from American automotive design. As each model year progressed, designs became less and less ostentatious as the reality of the American position in space became more and more clear. The 1960 model year cars, the first to be designed under the shadow of Sputnik, featured far more restrained styling, with a great decrease in futuristic, space-inspired styling cues, best symbolized by the dramatic decrease in tailfin height between the 19 Cadillac. The fact of the matter is, however, that the majority, if not all, of the designs for 1957-1959 were essentially finalized by early 1957, before the launch of Sputnik. The late 1950s represented the height of the tailfin era, just as space became a reality. The early Soviet victories in the Space Race caused a sobering up of the American public. Space was no longer a whimsical thing of people’s imaginations. The United States, the supposed scientific leader of the world, had created a “Flopnik.” It wasn’t until January of 1958 that the United States managed to launch a successful satellite, Explorer 1, into space. To add insult to injury, the first American entry into the Space Race, a small satellite carried atop the Navy’s Vanguard rocket, exploded in spectacular fashion at just five feet above the launch pad in December of 1957. Less than a month after the successful launch of Sputnik 1, the Soviets successfully launched the far more advanced Sputnik 2, weighing roughly five times more and carrying far more advanced instruments as well as a dog named Laika – the first living organism to enter space. The idea that the Soviets would beat us into and dominate space wasn’t really even a thought going through people’s minds, but beat us they did. For Americans of the late 1950s, space was really no more than a whimsical fantasy, something that would be explored “in the near future” by Americans. There were towering tailfins and rocket-engine inspired taillamps futuristic design was all the rage and chrome was everywhere. The start of the actual Space Age occurred during the height of the space age of automotive design. Sputnik provided physical proof, as any amateur radio operator could tune in to its simple two-frequency radio, that the USSR wasn’t so incapable after all. Americans had long been convinced that the Soviet Union was a fundamentally backwards nation, incapable of any great scientific achievement. What occurred was essentially an escalation of fears to greater heights, so much so that the American public lost much of its feeling of superiority over the Soviet Union. At first the American public was rather indifferent, even positive, about the launch of Sputnik. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite, into earth orbit. SPUTNIK AND THE DEATH OF THE TAIL FINS ON CARS Disabling xbox one power chime1/2/2024 You can also configure all three of those to send push notifications, emails, or text messages, but not to trigger other smart-home devices. It also offers a clear battery reading (versus those that tell you it’s all “good”), as well as a Device Settings section where you can set custom alerts for humidity, room temperature, and battery levels. Aside from an Activity Log, the app displays humidity and room-temperature measurements, as well as averages on those stats for the previous 24 hours and seven days. Also, many devices include some sort of LED that flashes when the device detects a leak or has battery or connectivity issues.Īlthough an app that monitors for water leaks is probably the one app you hope you’ll never have to use regularly on your phone, the Flo by Moen app for iOS and Android devices is notably easy to use and visually pleasing, and it has a few interesting extras. Extras: Some water-leak sensors do double duty, keeping an eye out for leaks while also monitoring temperature fluctuations so you won’t have to worry about frozen pipes (a common source of leaks). We look for devices that can survive being submerged or come with external probes that can squeeze into hard-to-reach places. Longevity: Believe it or not, many water-leak sensors aren’t 100% waterproof and won’t survive a major leak.We don’t necessarily prefer one type over the other, but you will if you don’t have an available outlet near the spot you want to monitor. Power: Some smart water-leak sensors operate on battery power, while others need to be plugged in.The sound can also be helpful by notifying others in your home who don’t have access to the sensor’s app, such as a partner, a child, or a renter. It’s a nice feature if you’re at home, you don’t keep your smartphone near you, and the sensor is within earshot. Audible alerts: Many smart water-leak sensors sound an alarm when they detect water.Smart-home integration: Through integration with services such as Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and IFTTT, you can program your smart water-leak sensor to alert you to water by turning on a light or calling your phone, or even to begin addressing the moisture by triggering the fan on your thermostat. How sensors perform may vary depending on what your home is made of, its layout, and the strength of your home network. But wherever you place one, it needs to be in range of your Wi-Fi network. Range: Smart water-leak sensors are great options for keeping ahead of leaks in a bathroom, basement, laundry room, kitchen, or anywhere else in a house.Disconnect alerts: Smart water-leak sensors primarily alert you when they detect a leak, but we also look for models that alert you when they lose power or their connection to your Wi-Fi router-otherwise you’ll have no idea if they’re actually showing up to work and doing their job.Smart notifications: All of the smart water-leak sensors we’ve tried can send push notifications, texts, email alerts, or a combination of all three.Like every other leak sensor, it has a few quirks, but it’s still the best choice for monitoring more than one spot in a home. The system supports Google Assistant for announcing activity on smart speakers, as well as the web service and app IFTTT (If This Then That) for triggering other smart devices (such as a smart bulb) when it finds a leak. The hub can connect with up to 16 add-on sensors, responds quickly when it senses water or if it loses power, and features a loud (94 dB, by our measurements) siren. In addition, the kit comes with a matchbox-sized remote battery-operated sensor that connects wirelessly to the hub from up to 300 feet away. It includes a plug-in hub (and so can be placed only in areas near an electrical outlet), but it also has a removable 19-inch water-sensing cable and a 38-inch extension cord to lengthen that cable’s reach. The D-Link DCH-S1621KT Whole Home Smart Wi-Fi Water Leak Sensor Kit combines the best capabilities we’ve seen available in leak sensors into one bundle. It’s no surprise that the popularity of camping has risen in the last few years - there’s nowhere better to social distance than in the middle of the woods. Square tidal jayz jayz squarerosman1/1/2024 This deal is an attempt for Square to get a piece of the music streaming revenue boom for the decade ahead and also is a data play for all of Tidal’s users. The deal also gives Jay-Z a seat on Square’s board. Square, the financial services company started by Dorsey in 2009, purchased a majority stake in Jay-Z’s music streaming platform Tidal for $297 million. The second deal is the conclusion to TMZ photos that surfaced in 2020 of Jay-Z and Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey spending a lot of time together taking long conversational walks in the Hamptons. Not a bad return for Jay-Z after 15 years of drinking high-end champaign and still retaining 50% of the business. Just two weeks ago, on February 22nd, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) purchased 50% of Armand de Brignac for a rumored $315 million+. In 2014, Jay-Z acquired the other 50%, becoming the sole owner. It became ‘the cool’ and had the cultural buzz not only because of Jay-Z, but because of the history with Cristal and the empowerment that it represented. Within months, Ace of Spades became the hottest luxury champaign on the market. So what did Jay-Z do? He swiftly purchased 50% of luxury champaign Armand de Brignac and gave it the nickname ‘Ace of Spades’. This led to a swift response and a boycott of Cristal from the Hip Hop community, with Jay-Z stating, “I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands, including the 40/40 Club, nor in my personal life”. I’m sure Dom Pérignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business”. In 2006, the new Roederer (the parent company of Cristal) managing director Frédéric Rouzaud told a special edition of The Economist that “the house viewed Cristal’s association with rap with curiosity” and when asked if he thought the association would harm the brand, he replied, “that’s a good question, but what can we do? We can’t forbid people from buying it. The first deal requires us to begin back in 2006, when the go-to champaign at the time for Hip Hop music videos and at the club was luxury brand Cristal. The fact that these deals for Jay-Z have none of those conflicts, and in fact help reinforce his cultural standing, makes them even more remarkable. It is an all too common position for entertainers to be stuck between a brand partnership or business deal that comes with a large sum of money, but doesn’t always fit their values or cultural beliefs. These deals are not only representative of the level of superstar that Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) is, but even more clearly show the master negotiator and business mind that he posses. Over the past two weeks, he has sold stakes in two of his businesses for approximately $615 million. Last month the two formed a Bitcoin fund focused on developing the cryptocurrency’s adoption, initially in Africa and India.“You only have to do a few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong” – Warren Buffett Jay-Z and Dorsey have become chummy over the years, and last summer were seen together aboard a yacht in the Hamptons. “I knew Tidal was something special as soon as I experienced it, and it will continue to be the best home for music, musicians and culture.” “New ideas are found at intersections, and we believe there’s a compelling one between music and the economy,” Dorsey said in a statement. He added that he and Dorsey “have had many discussions about Tidal’s endless possibilities that have made me even more inspired about its future.”Īccording to Dorsey, who is CEO of both Square and Twitter, the deal “comes down to one simple idea: finding new ways for artists to support their work.” Artists deserve better tools to assist them in their creative journey.” Jay-Z tweeted about the pact Thursday, “I said from the beginning that Tidal was about more than just streaming music, and six years later, it has remained a platform that supports artists at every point in their careers. One of Tidal’s differentiators has been its high-fidelity audio offering Spotify plans to launch its own hi-fi tier later in 2021. Tidal, which hasn’t disclosed subscriber numbers, has managed to hang on in the streaming game amid competition from huge rivals like Apple Music and Spotify. Other Tidal artist-owners include Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Kanye West, Madonna, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. In 2015, Jay-Z led a consortium of artists in a $56 million deal to acquire Norwegian streaming company Aspiro. A responsibility matrix will clarify1/1/2024 00:17 a grid that shows the project resource assigned to each work package.00:14 defines a Responsibility Assignment Matrix as.00:10 The project management body of knowledge, the PMBOK Guide,.00:06 Let's look at the resource planning tool, the Responsibility Matrix. This definition is taken from the Glossary of the Project Management Institute, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, ( PMBOK ® Guide) – Sixth Edition, Project Management Institute, Inc., 2017. Responsibility Assignment Matrix: “A grid that shows the project resources assigned to each work package.” PMBOK ® Guide Monitor – a team member who tracks the progress on the task because of its impact on their responsibilities.Lead – the team member who is responsible for planning and leading the task.Approve – a team member who must review and approve the work of the task.Contribute – a team member who provides supporting effort for a task.Inform – a team member who needs to be informed about the work on the task because of its impact on their responsibilitiesĪnother technique that I like to use is CALM.Consult – a team member who may be asked to provide information for the task, but is not expected to do any significant work on the task.Often they are the primary individual doing work on the task. Accountable – the person who plans the task and ensures it is done correctly.Responsible – someone who must do a portion of the work on the task but is not the task leader. The most common technique is based upon the CMMI methodology and uses the acronym RACI. It is strongly recommended that you use one that assigns support roles in addition to lead roles for each task so that team members who must participate on a task are aware of that portion of their job. There are many techniques in use for assigning roles in the matrix. Assign the roles of other project team members assisting on each task. This includes both Core Team and extended team members. For each task assign one person as the individual leading the task. This is often a Core Team member.List the project tasks (summary or detail) down the side of the matrix.List the project Team Members across the top of the matrix. It also will highlight if a team member is overloaded or who may not have the requisite skills to do the work assigned. It provides a visual communication of the contribution of each team member. The Responsibility Matrix is an excellent communication and risk identification tool. When the team is large or members are not co-located, the assignment of responsibilities needs to be more formal to avoid confusion leading to duplication or omission of work. Small co-located project team, assignment are normally managed in the day-to-day team interactions. This technique is normally used with large teams and teams that are not co-located. The Responsibility Matrix is a project management tool for correlating project work assignments with project team members. AuthorWrite something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
